SUMMARY:Mediaeval Treasures of Perthshire
DESCRIPTION:What do a 12th-century graffitied text now in the Vatican\, a 13th-century pewter mirror-case\, and a documentary seal alluding to James I of Scotland all have in common? They are remarkable testimonies of the cultural richness of Perthshire’s past. Discover the religious orders at Coupar Angus and Perth Charterhouse as generators of cultural identity; meet some intriguing Renaissance Perthshire book-collectors; and explore objects excavated in the environs of St John’s. \nLearn how Perthshire housed texts\, images\, and objects of national and even international significance. This talk focuses on the items and artefacts that show Perth to be culturally alert and alive with European strands of influence at a time when Scotland’s place in Europe was a live issue: exactly as it is today. \nA talk by Dr Kylie Murray
